Jagoz: Born on Land, Raised at Sea
Jagozes are those born in the village of Ericeira. People of the sea, with salty souls and brave hearts. Those born elsewhere, the saloios, belong to the mainland of the Saloia region, but it is from the sea that the strength of this story comes.
Inspired by the jagoz spirit, we challenged artists to give a face to our new wine. We received more than 60 proposals full of talent, identity, and soul.
And after the vote, the most anticipated moment arrived… We have a winner.
To everyone who created, voted, and shared, thank you.
We are proud to present the new JAGOZ label.
Created to celebrate the courage, authenticity, and free spirit of Ericeira.
This is not just another wine. It is a tribute to those who live with their feet on the ground and their hearts in the sea.

Label 1
Rui Paulo Fernandes dos Santos
The sea urchin concept for the Jagoz brand symbolizes the connection between the sea, nature, and the people of Ericeira. This element represents protection, resilience, and the local fishing tradition. The spines refer to the cardinal points, illustrating the paths of the fishermen and the village’s connection to the world. The combination of warm and cool colors reflects the seasons and the diversity of wines. Thus, the sea urchin becomes a strong visual icon of Ericeira’s identity.
Hello, I am Rui dos Santos. I was born in the heart of Lisbon overlooking the river on a beautiful sunny day in July. I spent my adolescence between Fontanelas and Ericeira, developing a strong connection to the land, but mainly to the sea. From an early age, I established an intimate relationship with pencil and paper, creating worlds and ideas that shaped my personality, culminating in a first prize for drawing at the age of 9. From then on, I never let go of art and culture as beacons for my creativity. I have been involved in art projects and exhibitions, including painting, illustration, sculpture, cinema, photography, tiles, ceramics, and recently wood.

Label 3
Carolina Aguirre Skarlis
With this proposal, I aim to showcase Ericeira with the power of its sea and sea breeze, all protected by our statue of the fisherman. The idea behind my label proposal is to have a more relaxed and less rigid style, as the inhabitants of Ericeira are more homely and spontaneous.
I am Carolina Aguirre, from Chile, with a degree in architecture, but with a great passion for drawing. After a long journey in search of my passions, I decided to live in Portugal in May 2023. Ericeira was the first place that welcomed me, where I immediately made good friends, found a job, and met the Ericeira Philharmonic Band, which kindly integrated me into this Portuguese tradition. Currently, I use my free time to develop my ideas and enjoy this wonderful country. I am deeply grateful to be part of this incredible corner of the world. If I ever stop living here, I hope to always return.

Label 4
Pedro Alexandre Macedo Ramos
This proposal is based on the traditional toil of maritime labor, which for years was part of the difficult daily life of the jagozes, who were inevitably always associated with the sea. It depicts a fisherman tending to his net on the pier at Praia dos Pescadores.
Born in 1981, raised in the municipality of Mafra, graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Lisbon. Professor at the Mafra City Council’s Visual Arts Studio, at the Jaime Lobo e Silva Cultural Center (Ericeira), since 2011. Lived in Ericeira between 2008 and 2016.

Label 5
Angela Pinheiro
The proposal for this label was inspired by ancestral Ericeira, Ericeira as a fishing village, and the importance of not letting fishing and fishermen become just a memory one day… The concept was born in the blue pulp fog that stubbornly appears on summer mornings, which runs through our skin and settles in the soul and essence of Ericeira and its people, its people.
She was born in Lisbon, but since she was a child, her family’s weekend outings took them to Ericeira. Living proof that good childhood memories are not forgotten, Ericeira was the place she chose to live. An architect and visual artist, she chooses watercolor as her preferred mode of expression.

Label 6
Maria da Silva Viscata Lourenço
In this label, I tried to capture the feeling of wandering through the streets of Ericeira and the continuous fascination I have felt over the years for this village. The design aims to encapsulate various images that come to mind when I am at college in Aveiro and feel homesick. From the most famous sights, such as the fishermen’s beach wall, to images of local culture, such as the inverted tile at Casa dos Azulejos. Each tile represents a piece of Ericeira—its narrow streets, the trawler, the seagulls flying over the village, etc. I kept a two-color design—blue and white—evoking the tradition of tile panels found throughout the village, as a tribute to Ericeira’s distinctive visual identity. Together, these pieces form a panel of memories and symbols, united by the essence of Jagoz.
Born in the village of Ericeira in 2004, my name is Maria Viscata Lourenço. I am a Multimedia student at the University of Aveiro, passionate about graphic design and helping businesses grow. I work with several small businesses in Ericeira to improve their social media presence and would like to make this passion my life.

Label 7
Ana Sofia Alves da Conceição
I tried to focus on what Ericeira means to me: a beautiful place, blessed with a rough sea that requires equally strong people to enter it.
A passionate designer.

Label 8
Ana Sofia Alves da Conceição
This proposal is inspired by the strength of fishermen who braved the sea in search of a livelihood for their families.
A passionate designer.

Label 9
Patrícia Pereira
By the sea, a fisherman sits quietly, watching the sun dip below the horizon. The sky is painted in golden hues, reflecting off the choppy waters that have cradled life in Ericeira for centuries. The man holds his fishing rod with the calmness of someone who knows the sea like the back of his hand, while the salty breeze whispers stories of past generations.
This moment, so simple and authentic, is the soul of Jagoz wine. Like the fisherman and the ocean, it carries the resilience, knowledge, and tradition of the people of the region. A wine that pays homage to the calm of late afternoons and the deep connection between Ericeira and the sea.
Patrícia Pereira has a degree in Communication Design and Audiovisual Production, with a postgraduate degree in Graphic Design from the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco. With experience in projects that combine design, communication, and visual production, she stands out for her creativity and attention to detail. Her time on the Erasmus program in Slovakia and a solo trip through South America reinforced her adaptability, resilience, and multicultural vision. With a strong focus on results and flexibility in dynamic environments, Patrícia seeks challenges that drive her professional growth and contribute to innovative teams.

Label 10
Vasco Miguel Cipriano Gaspar
In the balance between the hook and the seagull, we find the essence of the sea: effort and freedom. The hook, a tool of man, is cast into the waters in search of the reward that only the ocean can offer. The seagull, light and indomitable, flies above the waves, a symbol of the freedom that comes from connection with the sea.
I like to explore the world through photography and video, always looking for new angles and perspectives. Nothing inspires me more than being surrounded by nature, far from the noise, where creativity flows better. Quiet spaces are my refuge, whether to create, relax, or simply enjoy the moment. And what about good wine? It’s always welcome! After all, great ideas also deserve a good toast.

Label 11
António Procópio
This proposal aims to represent Jagoz’s daily life, which is almost always connected to tasks related to the sea. Here, the net is being pulled in to prepare it for the sea. But this work is not done alone. The two proposals complement each other, as in label two, the net is also being pulled by another fisherman. The two men work as a team and help each other. The two drawings can be viewed independently and do not necessarily have to be together to function as a label. However, when we put them together, we can see how they complement each other. The two drawings together represent the preparation of the net for fishing. Both work in harmony, chatting about life, jokes, and banter. The work is hard, but the good mood never ends. The proposal thus aims to represent everyday fishermen who are always available for a chat. It aims to be interesting from a graphic point of view, but also for each jagoz to identify with those characters.
António Procópio, born in Alentejo on May 7, 1973, lives in Mafra and works in Ericeira. He loves living in the municipality and feels like a native son. He tried his hand at sculpture, animated film, and engraving, but it was in drawing that he found his true passion. For him, drawing is like breathing, it is like traveling. He is a visual arts teacher and loves sharing his discoveries with his students. He is also an urban sketcher, a movement that encourages the use of drawing in graphic diaries. He always carries a notebook with him so he can draw his daily life and the world he observes. He loves talking and meeting people, whom he depicts in his notebooks.

Label 12
Maria da Silva Viscata Lourenço
This label captures the essence of the true Jagoz – “Born on Land, Raised at Sea” – in a lighthearted and humorous representation. Seen through a window, as if we were peeking at an authentic moment of life in Ericeira, the fisherman, symbol of Ericeira’s identity, appears in a state of pure happiness, reflecting the pride and joy of those who live in harmony with the ocean. In an unexpected twist, instead of fish, he catches a bunch of grapes, symbolically linking maritime tradition to the art of wine. The trawler, the maritime tones, and the authentic details reinforce the genuine spirit of the village, making this label a vibrant tribute to the culture and unmistakable character of the Jagoz people.

Label 13
Ana Maria Bação Tiago
My proposal for the label was inspired by the strength and courage of Jagoz—the man who was “born” at sea. Using various graphic elements: the boat, the sea, the sun/sea urchin, fishing/surfing, the costumes, the lines of the walls, I created an illustration based on tradition, but also contemporary, in order to represent the modernity of today’s Ericeira. I chose the predominant color of Ericeira – blue.
After spending many vacations in Ericeira throughout my life, six years ago it ended up becoming my favorite place to live. My professional experience has covered several areas, from 2D animation, graphic design, web design, and illustration. I like to convey simplicity in my work. I love the illustrated world where anything can happen…

Label 14
Carolina de Carvalho Serranito
In this label, the characters that merge with the water are beings of both the land and the sea. Their broken lines and the smudges that suggest them offer a blurred vision, a slow gaze, a memory. The aim is to bring together the tasting of wine with the tasting of the image.
Carolina Serranito, born in Lisbon in 1997, grew up, studied, and became involved in the visual arts scene there. Her artistic work is produced in irregular waves, but with great dedication to drawing and crafting a story in each piece. Wine (preferably white!) is an essential companion to friendship.

Label 15
José Manuel Grilo Pepe
This is my proposal for the label of the wine “Jagoz.” It was inspired by the fishing arts of Ericeira. I decided to use the technique of Indian ink, thus creating an atmosphere of antiquity, of this ancient art that is artisanal fishing.
I am the son of immigrant parents, and as such I was born in France, in the northwestern region of the French coast. Fifteen years later, I returned to Portugal with my parents. Since childhood, I have had a great affinity for the arts, from drawing and painting to photography. Today, I continue to pursue these passions for the arts as hobbies.

Label 17
André Jose Duarte Baptista
The design features elements reminiscent of coastal scenes—there is a boat and oxen pulling that same boat, suggesting activities related to the sea and the countryside. There are artisanal fishermen so characteristic of the Jagoz community. It is a coastal environment with an urban backdrop reminiscent of Ericeira.
André Duarte Baptista (b. 1980, Torres Vedras) is an architect and illustrator. He holds a master’s degree in architecture from Lusófona University, specializing in urban regeneration, housing, and cultural heritage. The proposal for this label is based on the union of three worlds: land animals, sea animals, and animals of order. A woman returns from the sea with an ox, both carrying their baskets of fish, sharing the task and the gaze. This design suggests serenity after effort… A full glass, facing an inviting evening.

More than a name, a legacy. The deep blue of the label echoes the immensity of the Atlantic, which shapes the soul of the Jagozes – resilient and fearless people of the sea. In the center, the name stands firm, like the identity of those who belong to these waters. And below, the tentacles of the octopus emerge, a symbol of cunning and adaptation, qualities that define those who face the ocean and make their living from it. Just as the octopus dominates the tides with intelligence and dexterity, this wine envelops those who taste it with its intensity and authentic character. Jagoz. A wine with the soul of a sailor and an indomitable spirit.

For the label design, I used a mixed technique of charcoal and colored pencils to illustrate a jagoz seagull from the beaches of Ericeira. The charcoal tones reflect the climate and highlight the seagull’s white feathers, colors that blend well with the blue. 😊
Ana, illustrator and designer, lifelong resident of the municipality of Mafra, passionate about the culture and beaches of Ericeira, I have a degree in Visual Arts, with a major in general design. I am sending you an illustrated jagoz seagull. 😁 Thank you.

Vitor Caria
This label design celebrates the essence of Jagoz wine through a visual narrative that places the jagoz and his boat at the center of the composition. Using digital watercolor techniques, the artwork combines soft brushstrokes and vibrant colors to capture the dynamics and organic nature of life at sea. The boat, the central element of the illustration, symbolizes the bridge between land and sea, representing the jagoz’s journey and his intrinsic connection to both elements. The illustration conveys the strength, tradition, and identity of the “people of the sea,” highlighting the courage and resilience that define the jagozes. The organic texture of the watercolor and the vivid colors create a sense of movement and vitality, reflecting the energy and passion of the Ericeira community. This proposal not only honors the cultural heritage of the village, but also invites the observer to immerse themselves in the history and essence of the Jagoz, creating a visual identity that resonates with the soul of the wine.
Vitor Caria is a Portuguese-Brazilian artist, sociologist, and anthropologist who has lived in Ericeira for five years. An open window to the Atlantic. On the windowsill, a seagull rests, gazing at the infinite blue, just like those who live with their eyes fixed on the sea, dreaming of the horizon. This bottle is an invitation to that moment of contemplation, a toast to the serenity and vastness that surrounds us. Like the seagull, this wine has the lightness of the breeze and the depth of the ocean. A balance between freedom and roots, between departure and return. Window. Because each bottle is an opening to new stories, new emotions, new destinations.

Ana Calhandro
This proposal for the Jagoz wine label features an illustration of sea urchins, a symbol deeply rooted in the identity of the village of Ericeira, reflecting the historical and cultural connection between this marine animal and the land that hosts it. It is believed that the name of the village derives from “Ouriceira,” the land of sea urchins, a reference to the abundance of this animal on the local coast. Their presence on this label celebrates not only the region’s gastronomic richness, but also the relationship between the sea, the land, and the village’s natural heritage. The composition with three sea urchins refers to the idea of balance, tradition, and continuity—a link between the past, present, and future of local culture and customs. This illustration thus aims to immortalize the essence of Ericeira on the label of this wine: authentic and inseparable from its sea, transforming each bottle and each toast into a tribute to the soul of this coastal village!
Ana Calhandro, born in 1988, is a visual artist from Ericeira, with a degree in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo. In her illustration and painting work, she explores the essence of her roots, representing the symbols of natural and cultural heritage preserved in collective memory and in the stories of the people. Using mixed techniques of watercolor, watercolor pencils, and permanent ink, her work combines scientific precision with a sensitive and artistic approach, capturing each element with detail and authenticity. Her career also includes regular participation in markets and exhibitions, collaborations with private clients, collaborations with brands and author editions, as well as the promotion of online and in-person training courses in painting and illustration techniques.

Seagull. Pressed card and 3D painting. Map of Ericeira around the frame. The seagull is a symbol of Ericeira and the seaside. I represent it in this way, almost as a drawing, almost as a sculpture.
Célia Ribeiro I was born in August 1960, near Castelo Branco. I came to Lisbon as a child and lived my life far from the arts. Until 1995, when, by chance, I discovered that I had a knack for decorative arts. At the end of 1997, driven by the need to create my own figures, I turned to drawing and painting. At that point, it was no longer by chance, but rather a conscious search for what I wanted and needed to do. After private painting and drawing lessons, I decided in 2004 that the time had come, and I enrolled at the Sociedade de Belas Artes, where I attended the three-year Drawing Course. Exhibitions since 1998 and lots of imagination. I moved to Ericeira in 2019. 2023 – Exhibition of paper sculptures, Window display of “José Rola Paulo” os Ratolas Saltimbancos. – Exhibition at the Ericeira Art Gallery, Paper mask sculptures. 2024 – Paper sculpture exhibition, “José Rola Paulo” showcase, “The Dancing Princess” – Exhibition and sale at the Ericeira Art Gallery. Perhaps because I started out in the decorative arts, I am not afraid to use everything that comes my way and that I feel makes sense. So, what I have always wanted was to feel my voice, not getting caught up in repetition and a single style. In my professional life, I have also always been in contact with audiovisual media. Luckily, I came across open-minded people who taught me to see beyond. Looking back, the path was cemented with knowledge, because today I can mix watercolor with oil pastel, which is scary because oil and water don’t mix. Acrylics and oil, dry pastel with gouache and collages, anyway… When I started drawing and painting, I felt that this was where I should be every day, and the evolution was rapid.

– The painting explores the vibrant relationship between color and form, delving into the depths of the Jagoz people’s culture and their intrinsic connection to the sea. Using a mixed technique, the work presents itself as an abstract painting that captures the plasticity of maritime life and the emotions that emerge from nature, inviting the viewer on a journey of contemplation and discovery. The rich and dynamic tones reflect the beauty of the ocean, while the fluid shapes evoke the waves and movements of the water, symbolizing everyday life in the village of Ericeira. Each brushstroke becomes a visual narrative that reveals the traditions and stories of the Jagoz people, prompting a deep reflection on the importance of preserving the marine environment and the cultural practices that shape the community’s identity. The viewer is invited to rediscover the beauty hidden in the nuances of colors. “Ecos do Mar” is, therefore, an ode to cultural resilience and the need to protect the traditions that connect us to our environment, promoting a collective awareness of the importance of preserving both culture and nature.
Alexandra Nunes, Lisbon 1981. Graduated in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. Throughout her career, she has explored a wide variety of artistic languages, including photography, painting, ceramics, and sculpture, standing out for her constant search for innovation and dialogue between techniques and materials. Her works have been shown in art galleries in Portugal and Spain, with participation in solo and group exhibitions. It was in painting that she found a medium through which she could express herself, a reflection of her desire to experiment and discover, and also the possibility of sharing it. The visual abstraction marked in each work offers a narrative in the creative process. A delicate method where acceptance of the unpredictable is one of the most important steps that define the artistic process and enrich it, allowing each painting to evolve in a unique way.

It is impossible to ignore the shades of blue that Ericeira offers us. The concept was based on the strength of the black line, an analogy to the strength and courage of the fishermen, which simultaneously blends in perfect harmony with the fluidity of the blue sea and sky.
